According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of hearing loss is 5 out of 1000 live births, which means that about 2,600 children a year are born with some degree of hearing loss in Spain. It is important to note that of these, only one-fifth have profound deafness at birth (1 in 1,000 live births, or 520 new cases per year in Spain). The incidence of moderate hearing loss is in 3 out of every 100 live births (1,560 new cases per year). The early diagnosis of hearing loss allows a faster and more precise action, which results in a considerable improvement in the child.
